Janice Neighbour - Painter
Painting in watercolours, oils and acrylic as well as having worked with wool, Janice particularly loves painting feathers.
She designed her BraveArt work with her friend Ngawai's maori heritage and love of the sea in mind.
Entitled Arahia Ngawai 'Healing of the Sea' she featured paua, fine netting and her trademark feathers to depict waves breaking over the shoulder to wash in paua shells on the tide.
Janice is a member of the Mana Arts Society.
She has been an artist since 1987, and she has had commissions from international clients as well as exhibiting in Wellington and at Pataka Gallery.
A highlight was gifting Eddie Van Halen with a portrait painting she had completed of him in 1998.
She says that cancer has impacted a great deal on her life, so when she was invited to join the BraveArt project she felt “very privileged”.
“This team of women have a superb attitude to ‘kicking cancer into touch’ so I could not pass up this opportunity to help these lovely ladies shine,” she says.
Ngawai Richardson - CanSurvive
Ngawai is a keen sportswoman from Porirua who loves the true spirit of being part of a team sport.
She had to overcome her fear of water to compete with the CanSurvive dragon boat team, and now joins in their regular weekly swim training.
As one of the longstanding members of the crew she really enjoys how it keeps her fit.
She describes the feeling on the boat as “exhilarating” when they are all working together successfully to win medals.
Ngawai was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 while living in Sydney. She had surgery and follow-up radiation treatment. There was a breast cancer recurrence on the same side in 2013, which required a full mastectomy on the right side.
The message of her torso artwork is the Healing of the Sea.
“Having cancer is a learning journey,” she says. “It is not all negative.
It has opened many new doors for me.”
Ngawai has a successful career as a real estate agent in the Mana area, and has juggled this work with many years of dedicated training on the CanSurvive boat.
