Andrew Moon - Oil painter
Self-taught oil painter Andrew Moon is inspired by the realist Old Masters. He paints commissioned portraits and exhibits work at the Zimmerman Gallery in Palmerston North and his work Fast Supper is displayed at the Museum Art Hotel.
His work on Celia's torso features white lilies, and the Mayoral chains. On each tiny crest in the chain links, Andrew has replaced former Wellington Mayors' initials with the initials of every member of the CanSurvive Dragon Boat Team so they are all represented in the work.
Andrew was a finalist for the Signature Piece Award at the New Zealand Art Show with The Attachment, and has been featured in the Sunday Star Times with Pilgrimage (below), both works he is most proud of.
He agreed to support BraveArt to give himself the challenge of painting on a body casting, and to support the fundraising cause for the CanSurvive Dragon Boat Team.
Several of his close friends and family have been affected by breast cancer and survived.
Celia Wade-Brown - Wellington Mayor
Celia Wade-Brown has been Mayor of Wellington since 2010.
Before this, as an IT consultant, she travelled and worked around the world. Celia was an inaugural member of the Internet Society of New Zealand and founding chair of the 2020 Communications Trust set up to provide more people with digital opportunities.
Before being elected Mayor, she served on the Wellington City Council in the Southern Ward. She took on the responsibilities of the natural environment, waste and water and has strongly supported Taputeranga’s Marine Reserve and walkways including Te Araroa. She is the representative on the NZ International Arts Festival Trust, and founder of Living Streets Aotearoa, a voice for people on foot. Celia is well known for her powerful advocacy for cycling in the city, practising what she preaches by cycling as often as possible.
Her top priorities are good transport, good jobs in creative and clean industries, and support for local communities. Her drive to support community activities led her to support these breast cancer survivors in the BraveArt project.
She says “I have a sister who is a survivor of breast cancer, so I didn’t think twice before agreeing to support this project.” Both her grandmothers died of cancer.
"CanSurvive Dragon Boat Team are a feisty group of women with a wonderful attitude to life. I was happy to do this casting to help them.” said the Mayor.
